The Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital has had a productive run so far with its’ Golden Anniversary celebration. One of these advancements is in the fields of Anesthesia. Last July 6, 2018, our institution, headed by Dr. Gregoria P. Villaflor, and the Philippine Society of Anesthesiologist: North Luzon Chapter together with its’ Chapter president, Dr. Karlo Marco Orduna, has spearheaded the very first National Telemedicine Session in the Department of Anesthesia. The session focused on the topic of “The best practice in Anesthesia, Understanding the Machine” lectured by the PSA National President, Dr. Angel Gomez, with the assistance of the PSA’s Past president, Dr. Resty De Ocampo. Said session was emphasized with a demonstration on ultrasound-guided Axillary block anesthesia by our lecturers. We are very proud that the Telemedicine Network of the Philippines has helped us in broadcasting this session throughout different hospitals in the country, namely: Baguio General Hospital, De La Salle Health Services Institution, Philippine General Hospital, Davao Doctors Hospital, Tarlac Provincial Hospital. The event was also supported by nearby hospitals like Region 1 Medical Center and Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center.

With the success of the first Telemedicine session focused on the Department of Anesthesia, the DDVMH conducted a Clinical case video conference entitled “Airway Management in a Neonate with Pierre-Robin Sequence”. The case was also broadcasted to Ospital ng Makati and Region 1 Medical Center from the Lung Center of the Philippines presented by Dr. Angel Gomez.

Another field of success in our institution is the continuous learning workshops for our leaders in the hospital. A two-day seminar on the “International Best Practice on Hospital Quality & Patient Safety Standards” was guided by Medprojects representative, Ms. Carla G. Naniong. Said seminar is focused on improving the quality of care for the patient, management processes and policy development. The DDVMH top management has envisioned our institution to be competing globally with global standards of care and management. With this seminar, we are a step closer to achieving international accreditations from different international accrediting bodies.

In line with the constant training for our nurses, The DDVMH would be spearheading the creation of the Operating Room Nurses Association of the Philippines: Pangasinan Chapter. The institution believes that with this, it would help boost the learning of not only our Operating room nurses but all the OR nurses here in our province.

The institution has given its’ best efforts on giving the Doctors and staff unceasing opportunities and events for them to improve on skills and theoretical resource. One of the big events that has happened this commemorative year is the two-day Laparoscopy day which happened last May 11, 2018, as Dr. Wayne Hwang, the manager of STORZ, highlighted the surgical mission through doing a live surgery. Dr. Hwang efficiently demonstrated a Lap Cholecystectomy with ICG and Laparoscopic Distal Pancreatectomy. Participants who witnessed this demonstration were very lucky since said surgical procedure is advantageous as it decreases postoperative morbidity and leads to shorter OR time. A session on Laparoscopic Thyroidectomy was also demonstrated by Dr. Raymond Ong and Dr. Ike Mendoza. The event was made possible in cooperation with PALES- North Luzon Chapter. The second laparoscopy day of the DDVMH is grounded on the PALES’ advocacy of ZERO BDI (Bile Duct Injury) Campaign as doctors and nurses worked well in Basic MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery).

The morning session covered the first ever MIS workshop for nurses held at the DDVMH Conservatory. It was formally opened by Dra. Kay Jimenez, after which, the lecture series was conducted. As a wrap-up, a hands-on session was conducted wherein nurses got to have an opportunity to use laparoscopic instruments.

The doctors served as participants for the afternoon session starting off with Dr. Wayne Hwang of AITS-IRCAD Taiwan who talked about the Role of the Indocyanine Green (ICG) in Laparoscopy. A telemedicine session followed, with participants from other hospitals, chaired by Dr. Juvie Villaflor and co-chaired by Dr. Banny Genuino. Relative topics were then discussed by competent doctors: Dr. Crisostomo Arcilla Jr. who talked about Surgeon’s Perspective; Dr. Miguel Mendoza who discussed Achieving Critical View of Safety and Dr. Wayne Hwang who lectured the Tokyo Protocol on Bile Duct injury. In the latter part of the session, Dr. Raymund Ong showed videos where he pointed out lapses and malpractices in laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Juvie Villaflor wrapped up the session by doing a live surgery which was broadcasted in telemedicine.

With those events said, the institution is still hungry for more. So expect a lot more from the DDVMH family.
